Yonex Subaxia Gt Shoes Review

Overview

Last month's Yonex concept shoe Graphite Thruster (SH-GT1MEX) still lingers. While players imagined what a pro badminton shoe built on that idea might look like, the new Power Cushion Subaxia flagship line arrived fast — standing alongside Aerus, Eclipsion, and the 65 series. Subaxia GT leads the generation with a redesigned midsole frame, lightweight hard shell embedding front and rear Power Cushion REV foam, and dual Power Graphite at midfoot and heel — a hardcore midsole for explosive, fast-reaction players opening a new competitive chapter.

Appearance

Subaxia GT keeps Yonex's minimalist look but goes bold on contrast. Upper mostly grey-black; toe wear zones and side support share the hue in different materials — layered depth in touch and look. Graphics stay extremely simple — layout similar to Graphite Thruster — bright rear Yonex logo and small tech labels at key function zones. Against the low-key upper, the midsole steals attention: yellow-green and hot pink collide with confidence. Front and rear midsole pieces splice hard lightweight materials in those two colours; transparent pink side TPU links the sections, thinned at the heel so thick white REV foam shows through. Black propeller-blade outsole is visibly thicker, with two Power Graphite plates exposed in midfoot and heel windows. Multi-layer grey-black forms the base; yellow-green energy and hot pink impact symbolise calm force breaking ground — explosive power felt underfoot and seen in motion. Bold colour on a quiet base may be Subaxia GT's "steady progress" design idea.

Official technology

Power Cushion REV + 3D Power Graphite: built for explosive energy return — absorbing impact while rebounding strongly to fuel movement and jump smashes. 3D heel cushioning: cuts landing shock and helps smoother, faster footwork links so you seize initiative in offence-defence switches. Split midsole design: balances front elasticity and rear cushioning — breaking the old power-vs-comfort trade-off for speed and stable support in competitive motion.

On-court experience

Per-shoe weight (EU 42 test pair): left 340.8 g, right 335.8 g.

Configuration

Subaxia is Yonex's new flagship line; Subaxia GT is its first model. Design already shows a qualitative leap from past flagships — core is the Graphite Thruster concept. Below is how that setup works, then how it feels in play. Midsole frame follows today's mainstream idea: lightweight hard shell with front-rear foam fill — Yonex's first use of this in shoes. Rear foam is special: instead of a conventional embed, the whole REV pad curves to wrap the heel. In lunge landings the heel rarely hits vertically — it meets the ground at an angle — so embedded foam often only loads on one side. Subaxia GT's wrap-style REV increases contact area for better cushioning at multiple landing angles. Dual Power Graphite is another highlight. Midfoot plate handles familiar anti-torsion; rear plate under heel REV is new. When rear foam compresses, graphite rebound helps the pad reset faster — stronger rebound response without giving up cushion. That may be Yonex's fresh take on pro badminton shoes. Transparent side TPU further boosts anti-torsion. The whole package chases lightweight design while raising protection, speed, and explosion together.

Static feel

Two things stand out on first wear: Yonex's famous comfortable wrap — snug without pinching, excellent fit. My slightly wide foot felt nearly seamless. Second, the midsole feels thick compared with familiar ground-hugging Yonex shoes. Static testing does not show soft REV bounce; ground contact stays direct and fast, just with more thickness than usual Yonex.

Launch

Dynamic feel differs from static. Foam feedback invisible at rest becomes clear after a jump — front foot feels REV rebound. Launch balances stable landing and acceleration. More wear means more foot-shaped comfort. Unlike typical thin, direct Yonex feedback, Subaxia GT keeps some midsole height without obvious energy loss — between thick and thin.

Movement

First wear the centre of gravity feels slightly high, so I was cautious — but once running opens up, the midsole shows real spring. Foam needs pressure to fully activate: a static heel stomp will not compress the stack; the whole sole flattens instead. In lunge net rushes, rear cushion is easy to feel. On jumps, front REV differs from past ground-hugging flagships — softer rebound, less extreme court feel, more elastic feedback, lower foot power demand, less fatigue over long sessions. Outsole grip uses the propeller pattern, slightly thicker with deeper grooves — possibly better wear. Grip is normal; initial high centre suggests a few break-in sessions before full intensity.

Cushioning

Cushioning is the shoe's most obvious trait. REV front and rear changes the game — movement and jump landings feel softer than past Yonex flagships, with a higher ceiling that grows more obvious over time.

Summary and recommendation

Subaxia GT translates the Graphite Thruster concept into a new flagship — minimal upper, eye-catching midsole collision echoing "step-by-step victory." Config-wise it is among Yonex's most complex flagships: dual REV, dual graphite, plus outer support walls — stable speed and explosion fused. On purchase: initial centre feels slightly high but improves with wear. Midsole thickness wants some body weight or explosive power to fully drive. Cushion and jump are core strengths, with launch and movement stability kept — strong competitive character. Best for high-level competitive players and heavier players who need cushion, stability, and launch together.
