Li-Ning Saga III Pro review: the supercritical foam shoe grows up
Fifteen years after the original Aerus introduced supercritical foam to badminton, the III Pro arrives with stability fixes the line has needed since launch.
Overview
A classic IP back after ten years — and Li-Ning brought supercritical foam midsole tech to badminton shoes. Controversial at launch; good product survives time and receipts. From 2010 gen-one through 2020’s ten-year reshape and Saga II refinements, 2025’s Saga III Pro lands the line’s promise: more stable rebound, faster stability.
Colour and design
Fashion-forward looks always sold the Saga line. Saga III Pro ships in five colourways — Marshmallow, Year of the Snake, Artist, Warning, Dark Elf — on the family template: signature outsole side support, smooth one-piece sole, geometric upper frame, tech-accent lines. I picked Marshmallow candy gradient — fresh, easy to match on and off court.
Static fit
Midfoot cinch is moderate; on/off is smooth. Laced tight, EG2.5 standard last forefoot wrap tracks close to Saga II Pro, though III Pro runs slightly wider. Toe box suits most Asian feet; slimmer feet may feel extra forefoot or heel room — custom insoles tighten the fit. Standing: no obvious front-to-rear drop, centre of gravity balanced, outsole contact flat — everything reads stable.
Forefoot launch
Low-stretch super fibre plus BOOM fibre 2.0 and soft inner cotton flex without single-point pinch. Stress release sits at toe sides; space-cotton tongue is gentle on the instep; fused toe kills seam rub; cinched waist locks firm. Weight is real: size 42 (265 mm) — left 370.7 g, right 371.0 g per shoe. Stability can feel heavy. Heel foam is substantial; biomimetic cat-tongue outer counter fights slip. Single-finger carbon plate booster eases arch load and adds push — forefoot stomp stays firm, no soft collapse. Firm launch trades absolute speed — 370 g shows lag on lateral cross-starts; shoe-foot unity pulls some of that back.
Landing cushion
Cloud Frame plus full-length BOOM transmits bridge force cleaner than plain full BOOM and cushions better than split embeds. TPU-wrapped Cloud Frame feels tighter than EVA with a higher shock ceiling — lighter players get ordered firm contact; heavier players get resilient sandwich rebound without mush. Step down bold.
Arch support and anti-rollover
Saga II Pro’s large split carbon plate fixed arch ache but felt aggressively stiff on the foot. III Pro dual-density midsole plus single-finger carbon neutralises — stable without dead stillness. Inherited outsole side-wrap “claw” is still the line’s badge — outstanding in limit lateral saves, smooth landing, confidence to dive.
Minor issues
Two-tone laces use slick fibres and can loosen — pull firmer. Vajar skin heat-bond upper wears faster on drag-to-net and scramble saves; bright Marshmallow shows stains — anti-wear patches help. Colour film on TPU scuffs normally; diamond skin beneath stays functional.
Summary
“Slow is stable, stable is fast.” Saga III Pro shows speed through stability while keeping bounce — from full BOOM surge through split embeds to mature full-BOOM frame, the line’s most complete form yet. Best partner for players who want cushion feel and launch speed and will accept weight for that platform.
